 Drama:

The written exam is comprised of 3 sections:
 
SECTION A: Response to practical work completed during the course.
 
SECTION B: Response to the study and performance of a scripted play.
 
SECTION C: Response to live theatre.
 
Section A is compulsory. Candidates must answer all 4 parts of the question.
 
Candidates then choose a further question from either Section B or Section C.

Candidates study 4 practical units assessed during the course:
 
Devised Theatre
Acting from Script x 2
Theatre in Education
 
Each unit is divided into 2 parts:
 
PART 1: Process and understanding of skills in process.   (Preparation for performance)
 
Part 2: Final presentation/performance

UNIT 1 WRITTEN EXAM
SECTION B
Candidates should write about their Year 11 scripted performance.
It is comprised of 2 sub-questions: 5 and 6 or 7 and 8.
Each question is worth 20 marks.
Candidates should spend 20 minutes on each question.

Candidates should always be aware of the potential
effectiveness for an audience. They should be able
to demonstrate their understanding of practical skills
as well as their knowledge and understanding of the
chosen play from a performance perspective,
and they should be able to analyse and evaluate the
effectiveness of their ideas and skills and those of
others.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
• a clear understanding of how plays are
constructed and realised
• informed knowledge and understanding of the
acting skills required to realise the play
• informed knowledge and understanding of the
technical and design elements and the skills
required to realise the play
• informed knowledge and understanding of the
social, historical and cultural context of the play
• the ability to analyse and evaluate the
effectiveness of the skills required
• the ability to analyse and evaluate the
effectiveness of the production as a whole.

UNIT 1: WRITTEN EXAM
SECTION A
This question is compulsory.
Candidates should write about their TIE performance.
It is comprised of 4 questions.
Each question is worth 10 marks.
Candidates should spend 10 minutes on each question.


When preparing for this section, candidates will
need to think about their skills development during
the course when taking part in practical projects.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
• a clear understanding of the practical performance
work undertaken
• informed knowledge and understanding of the
acting skills required
• informed knowledge and understanding of the
technical and design elements required
• the ability to analyse and evaluate the
effectiveness of the skills involved
• the ability to analyse and evaluate the
effectiveness of the work as a whole.
Response to Theatre in Education performance
UNIT 2: PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT
UNIT 1: Devised 'The Truth About Teenagers'
A non-naturalistic devised performance which explores what it means to be a teenager in 21st Century.
Formally assessed performance in February of Year 10

UNIT 2: Study and performance of a script
A study of realism through the understanding and performance of a scripted extract.
Formally assessed performance in June of Year 10

UNIT 3: Theatre in Education
A study of Forum Theatre; the creation and performance of a piece of theatre which educated a specific target audience on a particular theme.
Formally assessed performance in November of Year 11

Unit 4: Study and performance of a script
A study of realism through the understanding and performance of a set text, 'DNA' by Dennis Kelly.
Formally assessed performance in March of Year 11

In all practical units, candidates should demonstrate the ability to:

Part 1 mark /15

• recall, select and communicate their knowledge
and understanding of work in progress
• recognise strengths and weaknesses in working
processes and presentation
• demonstrate understanding of their own
capabilities and the demands of working in a
group
• verbally assess their final performance.

Part 2 mark /45

• recall, select and communicate their knowledge
and understanding of drama to generate,
explore and develop ideas during the process of
development to performance
• work in role to create a character or characters,
interpret with creativity and originality; sustain role or
character; show an awareness of audience
• use practical skills to communicate in
performance with clarity, fluency, control,
appropriateness to character and sustain with
pace, projection, vocal and physical flexibility,
timing and spatial awareness

 How you can help your child....

Assist in researching themes or topics for devised pieces.
Assist in helping them to learn lines for scripted pieces.
Taking your child to see as much live theatre as possible.
Encourage your child to attend after school rehearsals.
Encourage your child to attend scheduled booster classes for written paper. Every Tuesday from 3.15 to 4.30 from March.
