Latin Study (Narratives)Controlled Assessment - 4 hours in class in controlled conditions
We study 120 lines from Virgil's Aeneid Book 2 together.  The subject of these lines is the Trojan War and Aeneid's account of the Trojans receiving the 'gift' of the Trojan Horse and then pupils answer personalised questions based on the text.

We answer the questions on 'Entertainment and Leisure' our topic set for 2013, 2014 and 2015.  5 questions with answers in English, referring to sources and pictures.  Some answers are worth more marks and are brief essay type questions.

1 hour 15 min exam; Unseen comprehension and translation
A booklet which contains 3 questions based on an unseen Latin text.  The text is divided into 4:
1) the first section of Latin is given with vocabulary (NOT on our given list of 400 words).  Over the next few pages are quick comprehension questions and some multiple choice questions on this text.  Pupils should take care when answering these questions and translate the text carefully before attempting the questions.
WORTH 25 MARKS
2) the second section of Latin is given with unseen vocabulary and space for pupils to write a translation.
3) the third section of Latin is a continuation of the translation.
WORTH 40 MARKS
4) Finally, the fourth section is given with comprehension questions as in the first section.  Again pupils should take care, particularly with any questions worth more marks.

Answer 3 questions based on texts in the exam booklet including the final thematic-based question.
ANSWER ONLY ON TOPIC: Growing up in Rome
Following a study of Roman poetry and prose based on the theme 'Growing up in Rome', a one hour exam which refers to specific texts which pupils have studied and one longer essay question which is thematic and pupils can draw on all texts as they wish.  The poems and prose are:

Cicero Pro Caelio 25,28,30,40, prose excerpt about the faults of youth
Horace Satire 1.6 lines 71-88, poetry excerpt about himself and his father.  Topics: status, schooling, choice of career
Petronius Satyricon 46, prose excerpt involving a fictional character talking about his son.  Topic: schooling, status choice of career hobbies.
Martial Epigrams 5.34, poetry whole work.  Poem about himself and slave girl.  Topics: death, slavery
Martial Epigrams 10.62, poetry whole work.  Poem addressed to schoolteacher about schooling and corporal punishment
Martial Epigrams 11.39, poetry whole work.  Poem addressed to paedagogos.  Topics: being adult, slavery
Juvenal Satire 14 lines 1, 4-14, 31-33, poetry excerpt about the faults of youth and parental influence
Pliny Letters 9.12, prose whole work.  Letter to friend about a parent about the faults of youth and parenting
Tacitus Agricola 4-5, prose excerpt.  About parental influence

4 hour Controlled Assessment in class
We study 120 lines from Virgil's Aeneid Book 2 together. 
 
Once we have studied the text each pupil chooses 15 lines and a question for 'close analysis'.  A second 'thematic' question is also answered based on all 120 lines.
 
Finally, pupils take their controlled assessment over four lessons and under controlled conditions.
The subject of these lines is the Trojan War and Aeneid's account of the Trojans receiving the 'gift' of the Trojan Horse.
Aeneid is relating the story of the Trojan war to Dido and explaining how the Greeks came to win by treacherous means after 10 years of fightin and siege...

Answer all questions and sub-questions based on sources studied within the topic, Entertainment and Leisure.
5 questions on different sources.
Pupils have studied the topic - Entertainment and Leisure.
Within this they have learnt:

3) The amphitheatre
4) The Circus Maximus

 How you can help your child....

Ask to see evidence of their revision and have pupils explain what is required of them to you.
• Keep revising vocab from the sheets provided.
• Ensure that deadlines are met.
• Ensure that their folder is well organized.
• Use the CSCP website to revise and practice translation.
• Use the internet to revise grammar and syntax.
• Keep checking the SLG for resources and work set.
• Remember that homework is always in place for Latin; revision, grammar, vocab, literature and Roman Civilisation.
