Year 11 Science Controlled Assessments (ISAs)
Each GCSE has a controlled assessment (otherwise known as an ISA) component worth 25% of the final mark.

For those students who are studying the Double award, they are given two ISAs in Year 10 (November and February) and one ISA in Year 11 (January).  The best result from Year 10 is included in the overall grade for Science A GCSE and the result from year 11 is included in the overall result for the Additional GCSE.

If the department feels that a student would benefit from further attempts students will be informed by their class teacher although this opportunity is limited to those well below their target grade.
The Controlled assessment is a practical exam delivered over a whole day in class.
Paper one (45mins) is a planning exam where students are asked to discuss research and write a method for a practical concerning a given hypothesis.  To support them, students complete a Candidate research sheet before the day, which they are allowed to take in with them to the exam.
Students then complete the practical element with a method given to them by the teacher.
Paper 2 (50mins) is an analysis of the results obtained and analysis and evaluation of investigations carried out by others scientists. The candidate research sheet is also allowed during this exam.
This component is internally assessed however, as there are strict moderation procedures we need to adhere to, time must be given before results are discussed with students.  A date for results to be released by teachers will be discussed with students.  Please bear in mind that grade boundaries change significantly year on year so any grade given to a student can change in the final result.

How you can help your child....

Ensure that your child has the Collins Science Revision guide
Make sure that they have checklists for the units covered. These are available from the SLG or their class teacher.
Make mind maps of all the sub-topics in each unit making sure that they are well structured, colourful and uses keywords
Work together with other students to discuss the content and test each other with key flash cards
Visit the StringerScience website for links to revision websites
Attend Science drop-in surgery sessions every Wednesday from 3:30pm
Produce flow or labelled diagrams to explain processes and pin them up around the house
Make a recording of key concepts and listen back to them later
Complete as many past papers as possible via the AQA website and then mark them using the mark schemes. Identify areas you need to revisit
Vary what they do to keep it fresh and them engaged, give them a quiet space to complete their tasks and most importantly take an interest in what they have covered and what they still need to do
