Business is not an exact science; there are no rules that work every time for all businesses. The study of businesses is an art which enables students to develop analytical and critical skills, transferable to college courses as well as future employment.
The best way to learn is to do! In Business we believe in, and encourage, students to develop an interest in and enthusiasm for the study of business. We believe it is extremely important that students gain real experience of the business world and given opportunity to visit different types of business. Our curriculum trips have added value and have included Drusilla’s, Middle Farm, Thorpe Park and Disneyland. We also invite guest speakers to talk to our students to give them a healthy insight of the world of work. In the past we have had speakers from trading standards, entrepreneurs, programmers, fashion company employees, the theatre, a marketing company and a manager from a leisure centre.
There are 3 dedicated ICT classrooms, equipped with:
· 28 PCs equipped with specialist ICT curriculum and industry-standard software
· Projectors, speakers and whiteboards
· Headphones and digital cameras when required
· Dedicated table areas
· Height adjustable and swivel chairs

Years 10 and 11 (Key Stage 4)
Students follow the GCSE in Business and Communication Systems (AQA Board). The course is aimed at students who wish to develop an understanding of current and emerging business technologies, but also have a desire to demonstrate their ability to use communication system tools in a business context effectively. Within the course the two aspects of Business (unit 8) and Communications Systems (unit 9) are taught alongside each other – a focus on business theory combined with a range of practical IT skills using industry standard software.
Unit 8 - Business and their communication systems – this unit examines the reasons for starting a business, why they may succeed or fail, as well as the influence of customers and competitors on decision making. Procedures for checking internal and external business communications, hardware (input and output devices etc.), ecommerce and data security are also covered.
Unit 9 - Developing business communication systems – students will be required to critically examine communication systems in a range of organisations and make suggestions for improvement. Part of this will include describing and evaluating the main methods of business communication, evaluating the application of common devices (mobile phones, faxes, video conferencing, satellite navigation etc.) and producing formal business documentation (reports, letters, slide show presentations, internet web pages etc.).
Unit 10 - ICT skills for business communication systems – students will develop the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to maintain and use business communication systems based on standard office software (word processing, DTP, presentation, web-creation, spreadsheet, database, diary management and graphics). They will assess the benefits and drawbacks of each one in relation to business
Students are assessed through 3 units of assessment in Year 11.
Controlled Assessment (25%)
Unit 10 – ICT Skills for Business Communication Systems (4 hr.)
Students are provided with a business scenario in which they must provide a possible solution. Students are given up to 12 hour’s research and planning time before a formal 4 hour session in which to produce their final piece.
Theory Papers (40%)
Unit 8 – Business and their Communication Systems (1 hr. written exam)
Students are provided with business scenarios in which they must provide answers to short and long questions.
Practical Paper (25%)
Unit 9 – ICT systems in Business Developing Business Communication Systems (1.5 hrs. computer based examination)
This assessment is of students' ability to use computers and the appropriate software for a given business scenario. Typical examples include:
· Production of posters or advertising materials using desktop publishing;
· Creating spreadsheets to manage information;
· Use of word processing to produce business documents;
· Designing a database to enter, store and organise data.

Teachers offer a variety of lunchtime and after school sessions which are held in various rooms of the ICT Suite. Business club held in D10 Tuesday lunchtimes where pupils, of all years, are invited to share business ideas before they are put into reality! Our GCSE students mentor those from lower school to ensure their business ventures run professionally and smoothly. We have a pre-love school uniform venture that joins many other well established ventures such as Valentine roses, Sports day ice cream, Easter gifts, Smoothie bike and our recent Brazilian food enterprise.
